Geography

Svalbard is a remote Arctic archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, roughly midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole. Together with the small, isolated volcanic island of Jan Mayen it forms this Norwegian territory.

Glaciers and permafrost cover most of the land, and polar bears outnumber people; it is home to the Global Seed Vault.

Is Svalbard and Jan Mayen a country?

Svalbard is an integral part of Norway but with a unique status under the 1920 Svalbard Treaty, which gives citizens of many countries equal rights to live and work there visa-free. Jan Mayen is a separate, uninhabited-except-for-staff Norwegian island.
