Geography

Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, lying in the English Channel just 22 kilometres off the Normandy coast of France โ€” far closer to France than to Britain. It covers about 119 square kilometres and slopes gently from rugged northern cliffs to long southern beaches.

Despite its French geography, Jersey is a self-governing British possession with deep ties to the UK and a powerful offshore-finance economy.

Is Jersey a country?

Jersey is a British Crown Dependency, not part of the United Kingdom and never part of the European Union. It governs its own domestic affairs through the States Assembly, while the UK handles its defence and foreign relations.
