Geography

Tokelau is one of the world’s smallest and most remote territories โ€” just three tiny coral atolls (Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofo) scattered across the South Pacific Ocean north of Samoa, with a combined land area of only about 12 square kilometres.

It has no airport and no port for large ships: the only way in is a multi-day boat trip from Samoa.

Is Tokelau a country?

Tokelau is a dependent territory of New Zealand. Tokelauans are New Zealand citizens; each atoll largely runs its own affairs, and referendums on self-government have so far fallen just short.

Economy

Tokelau’s economy is almost entirely subsistence โ€” fishing and copra โ€” supported by New Zealand aid and, famously, by its free .tk internet domain. It became one of the first territories to run on near-100% solar power.

Tokelau in its region

Tokelau lies in the South Pacific about 500 km north of Samoa, its main link to the outside world, and northwest of the Cook Islands.
