Geography
Mayotte is a small group of islands in the northern Mozambique Channel of the Indian Ocean, geographically part of the Comoros archipelago between Madagascar and the African mainland. It centres on the main island of Grande-Terre and the smaller Petite-Terre.
Although it lies within the Comoros island chain, Mayotte chose to remain French when the rest of the Comoros became independent โ and is now a full French department.
