Geography

Gibraltar is a narrow rocky peninsula at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, jutting into the sea where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. It is dominated by the towering limestone Rock of Gibraltar.

Guarding the Strait of Gibraltar โ€” where Europe lies just 13 kilometres from Africa โ€” it has been one of the world’s most strategic points for centuries, packing some 40,000 people into under seven square kilometres.

Is Gibraltar a country?

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory, ceded by Spain to Britain in 1713. It is self-governing in domestic matters while the United Kingdom handles defence and foreign affairs. Spain still claims sovereignty, but Gibraltarians have voted overwhelmingly to remain British.

Climate

Gibraltar has a mild Mediterranean climate, averaging around 18ยฐC (64ยฐF), with hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. The Rock often generates its own cap of cloud when the easterly ‘Levanter’ wind blows.

Economy

Gibraltar’s high-income economy is driven by financial services, online gaming (it hosts many major betting firms), tourism and its strategic port, which refuels passing ships. With almost no land and a tiny population, GDP per capita is very high.

Administrative divisions

Gibraltar is a city-state with no administrative subdivisions; the entire territory is a single dense urban area beneath and around the Rock.
