Geography

The Falkland Islands are a windswept archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean, about 500 kilometres east of the southern tip of South America. The two main islands, East and West Falkland, plus hundreds of smaller ones, cover roughly 12,000 square kilometres of treeless moorland.

Home to vast colonies of penguins and seabirds, the islands were the focus of the 1982 war between Britain and Argentina.

Are the Falkland Islands a country?

The Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory, self-governing internally with the UK responsible for defence and foreign affairs. Argentina also claims them as the Islas Malvinas, but islanders voted overwhelmingly to remain British in 2013.
