Geography
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are a remote, mountainous and glacier-covered British territory in the far South Atlantic Ocean, about 1,400 kilometres southeast of the Falkland Islands and on the doorstep of the Antarctic.
There is no permanent population — only research and government staff — but the islands teem with millions of penguins, seals and seabirds, and South Georgia holds the grave of explorer Ernest Shackleton.

South Georgia has a cold, wet sub-Antarctic climate averaging only about 2°C (36°F), with frequent snow, fierce winds and heavily glaciated terrain even in summer.
