Geography

Hong Kong sits on the southeastern coast of China, on the eastern side of the Pearl River Delta, facing the South China Sea. It comprises Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula, the New Territories and more than 200 outlying islands.

One of the most densely populated places on Earth, Hong Kong packs over 7 million people into roughly 1,100 square kilometres, with steep hills and country parks covering much of the land and the population concentrated around Victoria Harbour.

Hong Kong is not an independent country but a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China. Under the “one country, two systems” principle, it keeps its own legal system, currency, immigration controls and economic policies separate from the mainland, while Beijing handles defence and foreign affairs.
