Geography
Macau lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta on China’s southern coast, about 60 kilometres west of Hong Kong. It is made up of the Macau Peninsula and the islands of Taipa and Coloane, now joined by the reclaimed Cotai strip.
Tiny but extraordinarily dense, Macau squeezes nearly 700,000 people into about 33 square kilometres, making it one of the most crowded territories on the planet.
Is Macau a country?
Like Hong Kong, Macau is a Special Administrative Region of China rather than a sovereign state. A former Portuguese colony returned to China in 1999, it runs its own legal system, currency and famous gaming industry under โone country, two systemsโ.

Macau in its region
Macau sits across the Pearl River estuary from Hong Kong and is linked to the mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai, with which it shares its only land border.

Climate
Macau shares Hong Kong’s humid subtropical climate, averaging around 23ยฐC (73ยฐF). Hot, rainy summers bring the risk of typhoons, while winters are short and mild.
Economy
Macau has one of the world’s most unusual economies, built around gaming and tourism โ its casinos generate several times the gaming revenue of Las Vegas. This gives the territory one of the highest GDP-per-capita figures anywhere, but leaves it exposed to swings in visitor numbers.
Administrative divisions
Macau has no first-order administrative subdivisions; it is traditionally organised into a handful of civil parishes across the peninsula and islands.
