Colors and the Meaning of the Tonga Flag

History of the Tonga Flag
Since 1858, the flag of Tongatapu (mainland of the Kingdom of Tonga) had a white background. To the left of the flag were two blue crosses and two red crosses on the right side of the flag. In the middle of the flag, the blue letter M with a red letter A on it. In 1862 the country became Tonga and a new flag was accepted.
The flag designed by Prince Uelingatoni Ngu Tupoumalohi, and Pastor Shirley Baker, had a white background and there was a large red cross in the middle of the flag. The red cross in this flag symbolizes the blood flowing from Jesus Christ when it is crucified.
In 1875, the flag was changed. The new flag had a red background and the previous red cross flag was attached to the upper left of the new flag. All elements and features of the flag were added to the constitution. Another item added to the constitution is that the Tonga flag can never be changed. All elements in the flag symbolize Christianity.
