Colors and the Meaning of the China Flag

The Chinese Flag is officially called the Red Flag. On the red ground, there is a big yellow star in the left corner of the flag and four small stars.

The red color is used as a symbol of communism and the Chinese Nation, and the great yellow star represents the leadership of the communist party. Four small stars, curved in the right side of the large yellow star, represent the four classes that exist in the country (farmers, workers, petty-bourgeois, and firms in the Chinese-Japanese War that stand against Japanese).

History of the China Flag

China’s first flag was revealed in 1895 by the Republican insurgent Lu Haodong as a symbol of the resistance movement. The aim of this movement was to establish the Republic of China known as the Kuomintang. The flag of China at the time was blue, with a white sun in the middle. There are 12 triangles that shine around this Sun. These triangles are indicative of 12 months in a year. Blue is the symbol of freedom and white is the symbol of democracy.

In 1895, the Japanese occupied the Manchuria province of China, and as a result of this occupation, China wanted peace, and Treaty of Shimonoseki signed. As a result of this agreement had to give China, Manchuria province, Liaodong Peninsula, Pescadores Islands and Formosa to Japan. Japan’s occupation of China was so effective that in itself many governments were founded in favor of Japan, bearing the identity of Japan and embracing their flags.

In 1899, many political parties were formed to establish the republic, and these parties formed their own flags to represent their political aspects. The blue flag of Lu Haodong is used only in a few states. The flag of the state of Shanghai is significantly more widely used. This flag is multicolored and consists of five broad lines. These lines represent the Chinese peoples. The red line above the flag symbolizes the Han, the yellow line represents Manchu, the blue line represents the Mongols, the white striped Hui, and the black line symbolizes the people settled in the mountains of Tibet.

The war between the socialist and communist parties in 1949 resulted in the victory of the Socialist Party, led by Mao Zedong. With this victory, the new Socialist Chinese State was declared with the new flag. After China’s civil war was over, a new flag was designed by Zeng Liansong to unite all the Chinese under a flag. On October 1, 1949, the Chinese flag with the red background was used. The flag has five golden colored stars on this red background. One is bigger than the others and this big star is shown as the symbol of the Socialist Party. The other four stars represent the classes of the Chinese people. This classification is made by Mao Zedong and consists of workers, farmers, bourgeois and national riches.
