History of the Brazil Flag
The story of the Brazilian Flag begins in 1822. The flag is made up of green and yellow colors and the green color of the background represents the Palace of Emperor Don Pedro I and the yellow palace of his wife Maria Leopoldina. There was a shield in the middle of the flag, and there was a royal crown on the cross inside this shield and an olive branch around the shield.
On November 15, 1889, the Brazilian Empire was destroyed and a republic was established. Thus, the crusader shield and crown in the bay was removed but the yellow and green colors were preserved. This flag caused severe criticism that it resembled an American flag, and was only canceled after four days. Upon this, the Brazilians returned to their old flags and colors without an imperial crown.
On November 19, 1889, the new flag of the republic appeared. There is a yellow diamond in the middle of the green floor of the flag. There is a blue circle in the middle of the diamond and a crossed white strip passes through the middle of this circle. One of the most important slogans of the new century “regime and progress” is written on this white band. In the lower half of the blue circle, there are 21 stars representing the number of Brazilian states at that time.
National Anthem of Brazil
After many changes were made in the National Anthem of Brazil, the poem written by Osório Duque-Estrada in 1922 was accepted as the national anthem. Since then, the flag has remained the same and only the number of stars has been limited to the proliferation of the states. Another star was added in 1960. After 8 years, the number was 23, and finally in 1992, the number of stars was 27. The yellow and green colors of the Brazilian flag have been preserved, but there has always been a controversy over what these imperial colors symbolized.
Today, the green color represents forest, yellow colored rhombic symbolizes natural resources, blue color symbolizes the sky of the capital, Rio de Janeiro. 27 stars represent 26 states together with the federal capital.
