  • Area: 4,489 sq. mi (11,627 sq km). It is approximately the size of Connecticut, the third smallest state in the United States. It is slightly smaller than San Diego, California, the eighth-largest city in the United States. Qatar is only one-quarter the size of the country of Estonia.
  • Population: As of 2019, the population was about 2.7 million people. This is approximately the population of Cincinnati, Ohio in the United States. Only approximately 13 percent of the population are Qatari citizens. Approximately one-fourth of the population are women.
  • Ethnicity: The population is made up of approximately 40 percent Arab, 18 percent Pakistani, 18 percent Indian, 10 percent Iranian, and 14 percent other ethnicities.
  • Industries: crude oil production and refining, fertilizers, cement, petrochemicals, and more.
  • Natural resources: petroleum, natural gas, fish.
  • Capital: Doha with a population of 1 million. The capital is known for its shopping malls, cultural facilities, and amusement parks. Al Zubarah, in the northwest area of Doha, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013.

The main cities in Qatar are:

  • Doha: This is the capital and the largest city, with a population of nearly 800,000. It sits on the eastern coast of the country along the Persian Gulf, about halfway between the north and south borders. It is well-known for its beaches and is the location of the Doha International Airport.
  • Al-Rayyan: The second-largest city in Qatar with a population of approximately 455,623. It is situated just slightly southwest of Doha. It is best known for its historical sites.
  • Al Wakrah: The city has a population of a little more than 141,000. It is on the coast of the Persian Gulf and has maintained its small fishing village roots while also boasting modern architecture and is proud of its thriving economy.
  • Al Kohr: With a population of just under 200,000, this city is on the Persian Gulf coast about 31 miles (50 kms) north of Doha. It has some of the most modern buildings in Qatar. The Al Kohr beach is family-friendly with cabanas, barbecues, restrooms, and showers. The indoor, air-conditioned Al Kohr Mall has more than 100 stores and restaurants.
  • Dukhan: This city is about 50 miles (80 kms) west of the capital. It is an industrial city that does not welcome visitors within its city limits, which are gated. Although the surrounding beaches attract some swimmers, there are no overnight accommodations available.
  • Umm Bab: Similar to Dukhan, Umm Bab has an attractive beach. Visitors may sleep overnight in their tents, but there are no overnight accommodations.

  • Its topography is mainly that of dunes and salt flats.
  • Qatar is one of the hottest countries in the world, with summer temperatures soaring to as high as 122ΒΊ F (50ΒΊ C). The country is installing air-conditioning even outdoors and painting its roads blue to make its residents and visitors more comfortable.
  • The seasons in Qatar are “a hot season” from April to October, with “a cooler season” from December to February. Some months in between are rated β€œnot so hot” or β€œwarm without excess.”
  • Qatar has been working to improve its highway system to make it easier for people to drive to other cities from Doha and to build bypass roads to relieve traffic congestion in Doha.
