History of the Colombia Flag

Francisco de Miranda is the creator of the yellow-blue-red flag used by Ecuador and Venezuela. There were at least two inspirations for Miranda’s flag. In a letter, Miranda described Count Simon Romanovich Woronzoff, and the philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a night conversation with Goethe at a party in Weimar in the winter of 1785.

Goethe said to Miranda, fascinated by Europe and America travels and fascinated by the heroism of the United States Revolutionary War:

Your destiny is to create in your land a place where primary colors are not distorted.

Goethe

Miranda designed the flag according to this speech.

After Miranda designed this flag, Lazzaro Tavarone said Christopher Columbus used a flag with similar colors on his fourth trip.

Another inspiration for Miranda came from Germany. Miranda wrote in her diary that she found another source of inspiration. This inspiration was the yellow, blue and red of Hamburg’s Bürgerwache, which he saw during his travels in Germany.

An army plan was made by Miranda in 1801 to save Spanish America. Unsuccessful against the British army, Miranda asked for three flags for the three regions, red, yellow and blue.

However, the first flag did not appear until March 12, 1806, when Jacmel, Haiti, wandered off to Venezuela.

The national flag of Colombia was adopted on July 20, 1810, when Colombia gained its independence from Spain.
