Mexico is one of the most tourist attracting countries in the world. 17.8 million tourists visited Mexico in 2017 with its ancient history, spectacular beaches and many other attractions.

More than half of the tourists who visit Mexico are American tourists. The United States was followed by Canada, United Kingdom, Colombia, Argentina, Spain, Brazil, Germany, France and Peru, while America was the first country with 10.3 million visitors.

Once upon a time, the extraordinary remnants of the great Mayan civilization are in Mexico. The Ancient Mayans had forward-looking agricultural systems, advanced infrastructure and splendid temples, and these structures were well beyond their time. You can also find the world famous Kukulkan Pyramid, one of the New7Wonders of the World.

Because of the high levels of crime and cartel violence citizens have been warned by the government “do not travel” to five states of Mexico:

  • Tamaulipas
  • Sinaloa
  • Michoacan
  • Colima
  • Guerrero

All the states have the highest rates of drug cartel activity, either hosting trafficking routes or extensive drug-crop cultivation.

This warning of the US government put these states in the same statute with Syria. The government advised travelers to avoid travelling in those states.

“Exercise Increased Caution”

Mexico as a country has a level 2 rating, means Americans should “exercise increased caution” because of concerns about crime.

According to an international report Mexico had 23,000 homicides – a number only surpassed by Syria.

Despite its diversity of places to visit and tourist attractions in the past decade,  drug cartel violence is often the first thing that comes to mind about Mexico. The illegal drug trade has had an enormous cost on Mexico in lives lost.

According to statistics of Knoema  Brazil, India and Mexico were the top 3 countries of homicide crime by 2014 in the world. Furthermore by 2014 Mexico was in the 4th place in kidnapping crime list published by Knoema. Top three countries were Germany, Canada and France. Mexico was again in the top ten of burglary numbers by country list in the same year. At this time the number one was the United States of America. Lastly Mexico was seen in the second place of the rape rates lists that includes all the world’s countries. The USA was in the top of the crime list.
