Colors and the Meaning of the Angola Flag
The Angolan Flag consists of a red and black thick strip that divides the flag evenly into two pieces. There is also a yellow-colored half-toothed wedge and star positioned in the middle of the flag.
While the red color in the flag was used as a symbol of socialism in the early days, it symbolizes the blood of Angola nation for the independence of the country, as stated in the constitutional framework in 1992. The black color of the lower half of the flag is the African continent where the country is located.
In the middle of the flag, while representing the working class as a half-gear symbolizing the socialist revolution, the machete represents the farmer class, and the five-pointed star represents the progress of the country and internationalism. The similarity of these signs used in the flag to the sickle and hammer marks used in the Soviet Union is the country’s commitment to communism.

History of the Angola Flag
The flag of Angola started to be used on the 11th of November 1975.
The flag of the MPLA (People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola), which fought for Angola’s independence in the formation of the flag, was taken as a base and was replaced by a half-gear, a machete and a small star instead of the big five-pointed star on the party flag. In 2003, especially by opposition parties, the idea of changing the flag was brought to the agenda and even the flags were proposed.
