Key Takeaways
- Istanbul is one of the world's great hubs. Istanbul Airport (IST) serves about 257 regularly-served nonstop destinations – more than any other airport in this list – and is the global mega-hub of Turkish Airlines, which flies to more countries than any other carrier on Earth.
- A coastline built for summer travel. Antalya, Dalaman, Bodrum and Izmir handle enormous seasonal leisure traffic from Europe, Russia and the Gulf. Their raw route counts are inflated by summer-only charters, so we rank airports by regularly-served flights instead.
- Istanbul has two giant airports. IST on the European side is the long-haul flagship, while Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) on the Asian side is the low-cost powerhouse and home base of Pegasus Airlines.
- US flights run only from Istanbul. Turkish Airlines flies nonstop from IST to more than a dozen US cities, from New York and Chicago to Los Angeles and Miami. Travellers from other Turkish cities connect through Istanbul.
- Airports spread from the Aegean to the Caucasus. From Izmir on the Aegean coast to Trabzon on the Black Sea and Erzurum near the eastern mountains, Turkey's network reaches the length and breadth of the country.
Straddling Europe and Asia, Turkey has built one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation networks, anchored by Istanbul Airport – the global mega-hub of Turkish Airlines and one of the busiest airports on the planet. More than 45 Turkish airports carry scheduled flights, from the two giants serving Istanbul to a string of sun-soaked coastal airports that fill with charter jets every summer.

Beyond Istanbul, the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts – Antalya, Dalaman, Bodrum and Izmir – draw vast seasonal leisure traffic, while Ankara anchors the domestic network and eastern gateways such as Trabzon, Gaziantep and Diyarbakir connect the regions. Below we map and rank Turkey’s major airports by the number of nonstop destinations each one serves, drawn from live route data on AirportRoutes.
Because the figures come from observed flight data – a large sample rather than a complete published timetable – we use the regularly-served count, which filters out one-off and seasonal-only observations. That matters in Turkey, where holiday airports like Antalya and Bodrum show many summer-only charter routes; ranking by regularly-served destinations gives a fairer picture of year-round connectivity.

Which Turkish airports fly to the US – and internationally?
Turkey’s long-haul flying is concentrated almost entirely at Istanbul Airport (IST). As the home of Turkish Airlines – a carrier that reaches more countries than any other airline in the world – IST is a true super-connector, linking Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas across roughly 162 intercontinental routes. Its low-cost sibling Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) adds a dense web of European and Middle Eastern links, while the coastal resorts connect mainly to Europe.
Nonstop flights to the United States run only from Istanbul. From IST, Turkish Airlines (joined on some routes by United, Delta and American) flies nonstop to cities including New York, Newark, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, Washington, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Boston, Detroit, Denver and Seattle. No other Turkish airport offers scheduled nonstop US service – travellers from Antalya, Izmir, Ankara or the coast reach America by connecting through Istanbul.
