Key Takeaways
- The world's third-largest air market. India trails only the United States and China in domestic air travel. Nearly 140 airports now have scheduled service, led by Delhi, which serves around 136 regularly-served nonstop destinations.
- Delhi and Mumbai lead by a wide margin. Indira Gandhi International in Delhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International in Mumbai are by far the busiest, together handling most of India's long-haul and US-bound traffic.
- IndiGo dominates the skies. Low-cost giant IndiGo carries roughly 60% of domestic passengers. Air India, now Tata-owned and merged with Vistara, is the main full-service and long-haul flag carrier.
- US flights run mainly from Delhi and Mumbai. Nonstop flights to the United States — New York, Newark, San Francisco, Chicago — depart almost entirely from Delhi and Mumbai, flown by Air India and United.
- A wave of new mega-airports. Goa's Manohar (Mopa) opened in 2022, Navi Mumbai is coming online, and the giant Noida (Jewar) airport near Delhi is under construction — reshaping the map of Indian aviation.
India has become one of the busiest aviation markets on Earth — the third-largest in the world for domestic travel, behind only the United States and China. Nearly 140 airports now handle scheduled flights, from the mega-hubs of Delhi and Mumbai to fast-growing southern gateways in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai, and a wave of brand-new airports opening across the country.
Below we map and rank India’s major airports by the number of nonstop destinations each one serves, drawn from live route data on AirportRoutes. Because the figures come from observed flight data — a large sample rather than a complete published timetable — we treat them as a strong guide to relative connectivity rather than exact, official totals.

Which Indian airports fly to the US — and internationally?
India’s long-haul flying is concentrated in its two biggest hubs. Delhi (DEL) is the country’s busiest international gateway and the main base of Air India, while Mumbai (BOM) — the financial capital — is the second. Together they handle the bulk of India’s intercontinental routes to North America, Europe, the Gulf and East Asia.
Nonstop flights to the United States run almost entirely from these two cities. From Delhi, Air India and United fly nonstop to New York, Newark, San Francisco, Chicago and Washington; from Mumbai, the nonstop US routes serve New York and Newark. Most travellers from other Indian cities reach America by connecting through Delhi or Mumbai, or via the big Gulf hubs (Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi). Bengaluru has begun adding its own long-haul US service, a sign of how fast southern India’s traffic is growing.
