History of the United Arab Emirates Flag

The United Arab Emirates flag was adopted on December 2, 1971, with red-green-black-white colors with Pan-Arab colors.

Each of the seven emirates in the United Arab Emirates was originally using a common red flag as a flag of the emirate. The red flag represents devotion and loyalty to Prophet Muhammad. In 1820, six of the seven emirates signed the treaty agreement, which was forced under British protection with the British Empire. A white portion was added to the left side of the flag of each emirate. The Emirate of Fujairah was the only Emirate which did not sign the general treaty with the British Treaty of 1820 and therefore continued to use the plain red flag.

The Seven Emirates

The Abu Dhabi flag is a red flag with a white rectangle in the upper left corner. The Ajman and Dubai flags are the same. Both have a white strip on the left side of the flag. Before 1952, the Fujairah flag was flat red. Fujairah did not sign the general treaty with the British Treaty of 1820 and is therefore still using the red flat flag. In 1952, it was decided that the name of the emirate of Fujairah be added to the flag and the name of the emirate be written on a red background with white Arabic calligraphy. This was done to separate the emirate of Fujairah from other emirates.

The flags of Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah are the same because they are both managed by two different branches of the same house. The flag has a big red rectangle on a white background. The Umm Al Quwain flag consists of a red background and is similar to the Ajman and Dubai flags with a white bar on the left side of the flag. As a symbol of Islam, the center has a large white star and crescent and represents the devotion to the Islamic world.

The United Arab Emirates flag was adopted on 2 December 1971, when the country was founded by the union of seven emirates.
