Can you place all 23 countries of North America on a map? This free North America map quiz drops you onto a clean, mobile-friendly map and asks you to find each one, from giant Canada and the United States, down through the seven countries of Central America, and out across the thirteen island nations of the Caribbean. No sign-up, no clutter, just tap and learn.
Play it five ways: Locate the named country by clicking the map, Name It when a country is highlighted, race the clock in Speed Run, risk it all in sudden-death Minefield, or take the Daily Challenge, the same ten-country puzzle for everyone in the world each day, with a shareable result grid and a running streak.
Most quizzes quietly drop the small Caribbean nations and leave you with 18 or 20 countries. This one has the complete, correct 23. The small islands are shown as clickable dots so they are genuinely findable on a phone. Works great on phones, tablets and desktops.
How to play the North America map quiz
- Daily Challenge: one ten-country locate puzzle per day, identical for every player worldwide. Finish to get a π©π₯ emoji-grid result you can share, and build a day-by-day streak.
- Locate: you are given a country name; click it on the map of North America. Green means correct, red means try again.
- Name It: a country lights up on the map and you name it by multiple choice (Easy), a first-letter hint (Medium), or typing the answer (Hard).
- Speed Run: locate as many countries as you can in 90 seconds. Streaks boost your score.
- Minefield: place every North American country in a single run; one wrong tap ends it.
How many countries are in North America?
There are 23 sovereign countries in North America, and this quiz includes all of them. They fall into three groups:
- Mainland North America (3): Canada, Mexico and the United States.
- Central America (7): Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.
- Caribbean (13): Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Greenland (part of Denmark), Bermuda (a British territory) and Puerto Rico (a US territory) are often shown on North America maps but are not independent countries, so they are not counted among the 23.
Tips for learning the map of North America
- The big three: Canada fills the north, the United States the middle, and Mexico tapers south. Learn these three first and everything else hangs off them.
- The Central American isthmus: south of Mexico, seven countries run in a chain toward South America: Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama. Belize and Guatemala sit up near Mexico; Panama is the thin bridge at the bottom.
- The Greater Antilles: the big Caribbean islands from west to east are Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola (shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic) and Puerto Rico (a US territory, not a quiz answer).
- The Lesser Antilles: the small islands curve down the eastern Caribbean: Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, Grenada, then Trinidad and Tobago off Venezuela. On the map these are clickable dots.
- No landlocked ones: every North American country has a coastline, so there are no landlocked nations, a handy fact for elimination questions.
How the daily challenge works
Each day the quiz picks the same ten countries for everyone, chosen deterministically from the date, with no server and nothing to log in to. When you finish, you get a shareable emoji grid (π© for a first-try hit, π₯ for a miss) and your streak ticks up if you played the day before. Come back tomorrow for a fresh set.
Data & method
Country facts (names, capitals, regions, flags, areas) come from the open mledoze/countries dataset (ODbL). The map geometry is Natural Earth data via world-atlas (public domain). Everything is bundled into the quiz at build time, so it runs entirely in your browser with no tracking and no external calls while you play.
Frequently asked questions
How many countries are in North America?
Twenty-three sovereign countries: 3 on the mainland (Canada, Mexico, the United States), 7 in Central America (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama) and 13 in the Caribbean (Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago).
Are Greenland and Puerto Rico countries?
No. Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, Puerto Rico is a US territory, and Bermuda is a British territory. They appear on North America maps but are not independent countries, which is why the standard count is 23.
Which North American countries are hardest to place?
The small Caribbean islands of the Lesser Antilles (Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada) trip most people up, and the Central American countries (Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica) are easy to mix up in order.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The quiz is built mobile-first with pinch to zoom, drag to pan, and every tap target finger-sized. The small Caribbean nations are drawn as clickable dots so they are easy to hit on a phone. It works in any modern phone, tablet or desktop browser.
Where does the map data come from?
Country data is from mledoze/countries (ODbL) and the map outlines are Natural Earth public-domain data via world-atlas. Both are bundled into the app at build time.
