How to play

Locate: read the prompt (for example, Find the Indian Ocean) and click the matching continent or ocean on the map.
Name It: a region lights up and you name it, by multiple choice on Easy, a first-letter hint on Medium, or typing the answer on Hard.
Speed Run: place as many continents and oceans as you can before the 60-second clock runs out.
Minefield: locate all 12 regions in a single run, but one wrong tap ends the game.

The 7 continents and 5 oceans

Most geography courses today teach a seven-continent, five-ocean model of the world. Here is the full set the quiz covers.

The seven continents

Asia: the largest continent by area and population, home to Mount Everest.
Africa: the second largest, and the continent with the most countries.
North America: stretches from the Arctic down to the tropics, and includes Greenland, the world’s largest island.
South America: home to the Amazon rainforest and the Andes, the longest mountain range on Earth.
Antarctica: the ice-covered continent around the South Pole, with research stations but no permanent residents.
Europe: small but densely packed with countries and coastline.
Oceania: Australia plus thousands of Pacific islands, the smallest continent by land area.

The five oceans

Pacific Ocean: the largest and deepest, bigger than all of Earth’s land combined.
Atlantic Ocean: the second largest, separating the Americas from Europe and Africa.
Indian Ocean: the third largest and the warmest, bordered by Africa, Asia and Australia.
Southern Ocean: the ring of water around Antarctica, formally recognised as the fifth ocean in 2000.
Arctic Ocean: the smallest and shallowest, largely covered by sea ice around the North Pole.

Tips for remembering the continents and oceans

A classic trick for the seven continents is the sentence “Eat An Aspirin After A Nighttime Snack”, where the first letters stand for Europe, Asia, Australia (Oceania), Antarctica, Africa, North America and South America.

For the oceans, it helps to list them by size: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, Arctic. Notice too that the Pacific is so wide it appears on both the left and right edges of most flat world maps.

Where the map data comes from

The land shapes come from Natural Earth (public domain) via the world-atlas project, and each country is grouped into its continent using the open mledoze/countries dataset (ODbL). The five oceans are drawn from Natural Earth’s marine areas. Everything is bundled into the quiz when it is built, so the game runs entirely in your browser with no tracking and no external calls.
