Major Airports in Indonesia

Key Takeaways

  • An archipelago that runs on planes. With around 280 million people spread across more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia depends on air travel to stay connected. More than 50 airports have scheduled service, led by Jakarta, which reaches roughly 82 regularly-served nonstop destinations.
  • Jakarta is busiest, Bali is the global gateway. Soekarno-Hatta in Jakarta is the country's busiest airport by far, while Bali's Ngurah Rai is the main international gateway, with the most intercontinental routes โ€” driven by tourism to Australia, the Middle East and beyond.
  • Low-cost carriers rule the skies. The Lion Air group (Lion Air, Batik Air, Wings Air and Super Air Jet), flag carrier Garuda Indonesia with its budget arm Citilink, and Indonesia AirAsia carry the bulk of domestic passengers.
  • No nonstop flights to the United States. Indonesia currently has no direct passenger service to North America. Travelers heading to the US connect through hubs such as Tokyo, Doha, Dubai, Singapore, Seoul or Hong Kong.
  • A wave of new airports. Yogyakarta's YIA opened in 2020, Balikpapan is the air gateway to Indonesia's new capital Nusantara (IKN) in East Kalimantan, and fresh terminals across Sumatra and Sulawesi are reshaping the map.

Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelagic nation โ€” more than 17,000 islands strung across over 5,000 kilometres of ocean, home to some 280 million people. With seas and mountains separating most of its cities, flying here isn’t a luxury; it’s the backbone of how the country moves. More than 50 airports carry scheduled traffic, from the mega-hub of Jakarta to island gateways across Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, the Lesser Sundas and Papua.

Below we map and rank Indonesia’s major airports by the number of nonstop destinations each one serves, drawn from live route data on AirportRoutes. Because the figures come from observed flight data โ€” a large sample rather than a complete published timetable โ€” we treat them as a strong guide to relative connectivity rather than exact, official totals.

Which Indonesian airports fly internationally โ€” and to the US?

Indonesia’s international flying is concentrated in two cities. Jakarta (CGK) โ€” the political and business capital โ€” is the busiest airport and the main base of Garuda Indonesia, with long-haul links to the Middle East (including the busy Hajj and Umrah routes to Jeddah and Medina), East Asia and Australia. Bali (DPS) is the tourism gateway and actually carries the country’s widest set of intercontinental routes, with nonstop flights to Australia, the Gulf and beyond.

There are, however, no nonstop passenger flights between Indonesia and the United States. Garuda Indonesia dropped its last US service years ago, and no carrier currently flies the route directly. Travelers heading to North America connect through a major hub โ€” typically Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, Singapore, Doha or Dubai. Beyond Jakarta and Bali, regional international service runs from Medan and Batam (to Malaysia and Singapore), Surabaya (to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore) and Manado, which has built direct links to China.
