About the data
The map is built from the NOAA National Hurricane Center HURDAT2 best-track database, the official record of Atlantic and eastern and central Pacific tropical cyclones. It covers the Atlantic basin from 1851 and the Pacific from 1949, through the most recent finalized season. The build shown here uses the HURDAT2 release dated February 27, 2026, which runs through the 2025 season and contains 3,266 storms and more than 87,000 six-hour position fixes.
Each colored segment shows the storm’s sustained-wind category on the Saffir-Simpson scale at that point, so a single track can shade from tropical-storm teal up through the warm hurricane colors and back down again as the storm weakened. The grey portions are the times a system was not tropical, for example an extratropical low or a tropical wave.
A few honest limits are worth knowing. HURDAT2 records a storm’s position, wind, and pressure, but not deaths or dollar damage, so this map does not show those. The lines trace the center only, and a hurricane’s damaging winds, storm surge, and rainfall reach far beyond the center, often a hundred miles or more. Records from before the aircraft and satellite eras are far less complete and less precise. The database is refreshed once a year after each season is finalized, and this page is rebuilt to match.

Are Pacific hurricanes included?
Yes. The map includes the eastern and central Pacific basins from 1949 onward, which covers storms off Mexico, Baja California, and Hawaii. It does not include western Pacific typhoons or Indian Ocean cyclones, which are tracked in separate agencies’ databases rather than in HURDAT2.
