History of the Montenegro Flag

The Flag of Montenegro dates back to the 19th century. The historic war flags, known as Krstaš-barjak, consisted of a white cross in the center and red ground. The first flag used in the Battle of Vučji Do in 1876 was the first flag in the history of Montenegro. This flag was also used during the Montenegrin-Ottoman wars. The same flag was used in Cetinje in 1878, when the Ottoman Empire in San Stefano recognized the independence of Montenegro.

According to the 1905 constitution, the national flag of Montenegro was tricolor in red-blue-white, the colors of the folk costume. Flags as state symbols were introduced only at the time of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš. The flag used before it was a single color and a single symbol flag. The flag was introduced in 1905, the current coat of arms was used, but the colors were different. This flag remained in use until 1918. In 1918, Prince Danilo added the coat of arms. This flag only consisted of three horizontal stripes of red-blue-white.

In late 1946, the flag of the People’s Republic of Montenegro, the founder of the flag of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia, was adopted. He added the communist Red Star to the center of the traditional tricolor flag. This flag was used until 1992. The current flag of Montenegro was adopted in 2004. For this reason, it is among the newest flags of the world.
