Colors and the Meaning of the Federal State of Micronesia Flag
The Federal States of Micronesia flag was selected in the competition held for the determination of the national flag, which was used on 30 October 1978 after the election. After the independence of the country, the flag was officially raised on 10 November 1979. The flag consists of four white five-pointed stars on a light blue background.
The light blue symbolizes the Pacific Ocean surrounding the island, as well as freedom and loyalty, while the four stars represent the four island states that make up the federal structure. White, which gives color to the star, represent different communities of people living on the island.

History of the Federal State of Micronesia Flag
Micronesia, which was a Spanish colony from the 16th century, used the flag of cross of burgundy like other Spanish colonies. This flag consisted of two crossed red diagonal lines on a white background. From 1785 the next Spanish flag was used. This flag is the Spanish flag used today.
Spain sold Micronesia to Germany in 1884. The country was ruled by German New Guinea. The Federal States of Micronesia flag used during this period was white, and the upper left of the flag was placed with the German flag consisting of three horizontal black-and-white stripes. On the right side of the flag was a black lion holding a fleur-de-lis.
In 1914 the Japanese invaded the islands, and in 1920 Micronesia was the official ruler of the islands as part of the South Pacific Mandate. The flag adopted during this period was the Japanese flag with a white background and red sunshine used in Japan today. In 1944, the US took control of the islands, and the 38-star and 13 red-white-stripes flag of the United States began to float on the island’s territory. By 1947, the region was one of the Trusted Territories of the Pacific Islands under the management of the United States by the United Nations. During this period, the flag of the United Nations was waved in the territory of Micronesia.
In 1965, the Pacific Islands’ Trust Zone flag was transformed into a six-white five-pointed star flag in a circle on a blue background. Each star represented a candidate in the Confidence Zone. When the Marshall Islands and Palau were separated from the Trust Zone structure, Pohnpei, Chuuk, and Kosrae remained the federal states of Micronesia. For this reason, the number of stars was reduced to four in 1978. From this date on the territory of Micronesia unchanged four-star flag has survived.
