Types of Camping Locations You Can Find
National Parks
Campgrounds operated by the National Park Service in America’s most iconic landscapes. From Yellowstone to Yosemite, find established sites with amenities ranging from primitive to full-service.
State Parks
State-managed campgrounds offering a balance of natural beauty and accessibility. Often less crowded than national parks with competitive rates and well-maintained facilities.
KOA Campgrounds
Kampgrounds of America locations across the country. Known for consistent amenities, family-friendly activities, and convenient locations near major highways and attractions.
RV Parks
Full-service locations designed for recreational vehicles. Features typically include electrical hookups, water connections, dump stations, and often WiFi and laundry facilities.
Private Campgrounds
Independently owned camping facilities ranging from rustic tent sites to luxury glamping resorts. Each offers its own unique character and amenities.
Dispersed Camping
Free camping on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and National Forest land. Perfect for those seeking solitude and a true wilderness experience away from developed sites.
About the Data
This tool pulls camping location data directly from OpenStreetMap, a collaborative mapping project maintained by a global community of contributors. The database includes:
- Campground names and operators
- Location coordinates for precise mapping
- Facility type classification
- Contact information when available
- Operating hours and seasonal availability
- Fee information where listed
Data is queried in real-time, so you’re always seeing the most current information available. However, we recommend confirming details directly with campgrounds before your trip, as conditions and availability can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this camping finder free to use?
Yes, the USA Camping Finder is completely free. There’s no account required, no ads, and no premium features locked behind a paywall. The tool uses open-source mapping data from OpenStreetMap.
How accurate is the campground information?
Location data comes from OpenStreetMap, which is continuously updated by volunteers and mapping enthusiasts. While coverage is extensive, some newer or more remote campgrounds may not yet be listed. Always verify availability and current conditions with the campground directly.
Can I book a campsite through this tool?
This finder helps you discover campgrounds but doesn’t handle reservations. Once you find a campground you like, you’ll need to book through the campground’s official website, Recreation.gov for federal sites, or ReserveAmerica for many state parks.
Why can’t I find a specific campground?
If a campground isn’t appearing, it may not yet be added to OpenStreetMap, or it might be classified differently than expected. Try expanding your search radius or searching without a category filter. You can also contribute missing campgrounds to OpenStreetMap to help improve the database.
What’s the difference between dispersed camping and established campgrounds?
Established campgrounds have designated sites, often with amenities like restrooms, fire rings, and picnic tables. Dispersed camping (also called primitive or backcountry camping) is camping outside of designated sites on public land. It’s typically free but has no facilities – you need to be self-sufficient and follow Leave No Trace principles.
Does the “Find Me” button work on desktop?
Yes, the geolocation feature works on both desktop and mobile devices. Your browser will ask permission to access your location. On desktop, accuracy depends on your IP address and network configuration. Mobile devices typically provide more precise location data using GPS.
Can I search for campgrounds in a specific state?
Yes! Simply type the state name or a city within that state in the search box. For example, searching “Colorado” will center the map on Colorado, and you can then adjust the radius to find campgrounds throughout the state.
How do I report incorrect information?
Since data comes from OpenStreetMap, corrections should be made there. Create a free OpenStreetMap account and edit the campground’s information directly. Your changes will be reflected in this tool once the OpenStreetMap database updates.
