Colors and the Meaning of the Zambia Flag
Zambia flag is formed on a green background and there are three thin strips on the fluctuating side that extend vertically to two-thirds of the flag. On top of these strips, the remaining one-third of the green area is covered with wings open, the golden eagle.
The green color of the flag symbolizes the forests and fields that make up a large part of the country’s territory, while the red, black and orange colors that give color to the three lanes as vertical represent the struggle for freedom, the black color represents the skin color of the people of the country and the orange color represents the rich underground resources including the copper. The eagle, which lives in the Zambezi river, which is named after the country, and with its wings open on the flag, symbolizes the country’s desire to reach higher targets and the superiority of the nation in solving the problems.
History of the Zambia Flag
Before independence, the country of Zambia was known as Northern Rhodesia. In 1890, the first flag to be flown on the territory of Zambia was the flag of British South Africa Company. Flag of British South Africa Company was a Union Jack flag. In the middle of the flag, there was a lion holding a tusk in his hand in a white circle. The lion was under the name BSAC, the abbreviation of British South Africa Company.
In 1924, Northern Rhodesia was officially controlled by British and British Blue Ensign was accepted. The ground of the flag was British Blue ensign, and the flag at the top left was Union Jack. On the right side of the flag was the shield shape. At the top of the shield, there was a yellow eagle on the blue ground, while the lower part had black and white wavy vertical lines.
In 1953, Rhodesia and Nyasaland came together to become a self-governing British Colony. The flag of Rhodesia and the Nawaland Federation was similar to the old flag. On the upper left side of the flag, the Union Jack kept its position and the shield on the right side remained in position. The only part that changes in the flag is the symbols inside the shield. There was a rising sun on the top of the shield, a red lion in the middle and black and white wavy lines in the lower part.
When Northern Rhodesia gained independence in 1964, the name changed to Zambia. The new flag consisted of a dark green background with red, black and yellow vertical lines and an orange eagle on the right. In 1996, the green field of the flag was transformed into a lighter green. Every element of the flag has its own meaning. Green represents the vegetation of Zambia, red is the struggle for freedom, black is the people and orange is the richness. Eagle symbolizes overcoming problems.
