Key Takeaways
- Maputo is the main gateway. Maputo (MPM) is by far Mozambique’s busiest airport and the home base of LAM, the national flag carrier. It anchors the country’s international links and connects to every provincial capital.
- No nonstop flights to the United States. Mozambique has no scheduled nonstop service to the US. Travelers usually connect through Johannesburg, Addis Ababa or Doha, each a single onward flight from most large US cities.
- Beira and Nampula are the big regional hubs. After Maputo, Beira on the central coast and Nampula in the north are the country’s main secondary airports, each linking its region to Maputo, Johannesburg and Addis Ababa.
- Tourism drives the coastal airports. Vilankulo is the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago, Inhambane serves the diving beaches of Tofo and Barra, and Pemba opens up the Quirimbas islands in the far north.
- LAM and Airlink carry most of the network. Mozambique Airlines (LAM) flies the domestic backbone, with South Africa’s Airlink, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways, Kenya Airways and TAP Air Portugal providing the main international links from Maputo.
Mozambique stretches some 2,700 km down the southeast coast of Africa, from the South African border in the south to Tanzania in the north, with the Indian Ocean running the length of its eastern edge. Its air network is anchored by the capital, Maputo, in the far south, home to the main hub and the national carrier, LAM (Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique). Beyond Maputo, a string of coastal and inland cities, among them Beira, Nampula, Pemba, Quelimane and Tete, keeps this long, narrow country connected, while a handful of beach and island airports serve a growing tourism trade.
Below we map and rank Mozambique’s airports by the number of nonstop destinations each one serves, drawn from live route data on AirportRoutes. Because the figures come from observed flight data, a large sample rather than a complete published timetable, we treat them as a guide to relative connectivity rather than exact, official totals.

Are there direct flights from Mozambique to the US?
There are no scheduled nonstop flights between Mozambique and the United States, and the live route data shows no US service from any Mozambican airport. The distance is too great for the size of the market, so every journey to the US runs through at least one connecting hub.
The most common routing is via Johannesburg, a short hop from Maputo, where Delta flies nonstop to Atlanta. Other popular options connect through Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines or Doha with Qatar Airways, both of which serve several US cities. From any of these hubs, a single onward flight reaches most major US airports.

A closer look at Mozambique’s main airports
✈️ Maputo (MPM)

Maputo International Airport sits just a few kilometres from the centre of the capital and is Mozambique’s largest and busiest airport by a wide margin. It is the principal hub of LAM, the national flag carrier, and the country’s main international gateway. A modern terminal, built with Chinese support, opened in 2010 and gave the airport a capacity well ahead of the rest of the network.
In the route data, Maputo reaches around 20 nonstop destinations. It blends a busy domestic schedule to every provincial capital, from Beira and Nampula to Tete, Pemba and Quelimane, with regional and intercontinental flights to Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Doha and Lisbon.
Main airlines: LAM, plus Airlink, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, TAAG Angola Airlines, Kenya Airways and TAP Air Portugal. See the full route map for MPM on AirportRoutes →
⚓ Beira (BEW)

Beira International Airport serves Mozambique’s second city and the main port of the central region, in Sofala province. The city is the saltwater end of the Beira Corridor, the rail and road route that carries cargo inland to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, which gives the airport a strong freight and business role alongside passenger traffic.
Beira shows about 8 nonstop destinations in the data, the widest network outside Maputo. Most flights are domestic links to Maputo, Nampula, Tete, Quelimane and Chimoio, with international service to Johannesburg and Addis Ababa. The city and its airport were badly hit by Cyclone Idai in 2019 and have since been rebuilt.
Main airlines: LAM, Airlink and Ethiopian Airlines. See the full route map for BEW on AirportRoutes →
🌴 Nampula (APL)

Nampula Airport is the main gateway to northern Mozambique and the capital of Nampula, the country’s most populous province. It is the jumping-off point for the Island of Mozambique (Ilha de Moçambique), the former colonial capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site a couple of hours away on the coast.
Nampula reaches roughly 7 nonstop destinations, mixing the domestic network to Maputo, Beira, Tete and Lichinga with international links to Nairobi and Johannesburg. It is one of the few Mozambican airports beyond Maputo with regular service to more than one foreign country.
Main airlines: LAM, Kenya Airways and Airlink. See the full route map for APL on AirportRoutes →
⛏️ Tete (TET)

Tete is served by Chingozi Airport, a few kilometres outside the city on the banks of the Zambezi River in northwest Mozambique. Tete sits at the heart of the Moatize coal basin, one of the largest in Africa, and the airport has long carried mining engineers and contractors alongside ordinary passengers. It is also one of the hottest cities in the country.
Chingozi shows around 3 nonstop destinations in the route data, focused on the domestic links to Maputo and Nampula plus a cross-border connection to Johannesburg. Traffic rises and falls with activity in the coal sector.
Main airlines: LAM and Airlink. See the full route map for TET on AirportRoutes →
🏝️ Pemba (POL)

Pemba Airport lies on a sweeping bay in Cabo Delgado, the far northeastern province, and is the gateway to the Quirimbas Archipelago, a chain of coral islands known for diving and remote lodges. It is also the regional base for the large offshore natural-gas projects being developed off the northern coast.
Pemba shows about 3 nonstop destinations, with domestic flights to Maputo and onward connections to Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam. Travelers should note that parts of Cabo Delgado have seen a security crisis in recent years, so it is worth checking current advice before planning trips beyond the city.
Main airlines: LAM and Airlink. See the full route map for POL on AirportRoutes →
🏝️ Vilankulo (VNX)

Vilankulo Airport is the mainland gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago, a marine national park of sandbar islands, dugongs and luxury lodges that is one of Mozambique’s best-known tourism draws. The small airport handles a steady flow of holidaymakers heading out to the islands by boat or light aircraft.
Vilankulo reaches roughly 3 nonstop destinations in the data, mainly the domestic links to Maputo and Inhambane plus a direct connection to Johannesburg that brings in international visitors without a stop in the capital.
Main airlines: LAM and Airlink. See the full route map for VNX on AirportRoutes →
🤿 Inhambane (INH)

Inhambane Airport serves the historic town of Inhambane and, more importantly for travelers, the nearby beaches of Tofo and Barra. This stretch of coast is famous for diving and snorkelling with whale sharks and manta rays, and the airport exists largely to feed that tourism trade.
Inhambane shows around 2 nonstop destinations in the route data, essentially the domestic shuttle to Maputo and a short hop up the coast to Vilankulo. It is a small, seasonal, tourism-focused airport.
Main airlines: LAM. See the full route map for INH on AirportRoutes →
🌊 Quelimane (UEL)

Quelimane Airport serves the port city of Quelimane, capital of Zambezia, one of Mozambique’s most populous provinces, set on the Bons Sinais River close to the Indian Ocean. The city was an important trading post in the colonial era, and its airport keeps the region tied into the national network.
Quelimane shows about 2 nonstop destinations in the data, the domestic links to Maputo and Nacala in the north. It is primarily a domestic airport serving regional travel and business.
Main airlines: LAM. See the full route map for UEL on AirportRoutes →
Mozambique’s other airports
Beyond these eight, a few smaller airports round out the scheduled map. Chimoio (VPY), capital of Manica province near the Zimbabwe border, and Lichinga (VXC), the highland capital of remote Niassa province by Lake Niassa, both sit on LAM’s domestic network, with Maputo acting as the connecting point for most journeys. Although Chimoio shows a route count similar to some of the airports above, it is a smaller regional field rather than a tourism or business gateway.
One airport stands out for its scale rather than its traffic. Nacala (MNC) in the north opened a large, modern international terminal in 2014, but it has so far seen only light scheduled service and remains far below its capacity. Together with a network of short airstrips serving lodges and mining camps, these fields fill in the gaps in a country where flying is often the quickest way to cover long distances.
Airport rankings, nonstop-destination counts, served cities and connections are drawn from live AirportRoutes route data (observed AeroAPI flight data, a sample rather than a complete published schedule).
