Douala International Airport sits a few kilometres south-east of central Douala, Cameroon’s largest city, busiest seaport and economic capital, on the Wouri estuary near the Gulf of Guinea. It is by a clear margin the largest and busiest airport in the country, the main international gateway and the principal base of Camair-Co, the national flag carrier.

Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport lies about 25 km south of Yaounde, the political capital, set among the forested hills of the Centre Region. Opened in 1991, it is the country’s second international airport and the main gateway for government, diplomatic and business traffic to the capital.

🌤️ Garoua (GOU)
Garoua International Airport serves Garoua, capital of the North Region, on the Benoue River in Cameroon’s savanna belt. Despite its “International” name and a long runway built for bigger ambitions, including past Hajj and charter traffic, the airport today runs an essentially domestic schedule.
Garoua reaches roughly one regularly-served route in the sample data, the Camair-Co link down to Yaounde and Douala that ties the northern regions to the rest of the country. The city is also a gateway to the savanna national parks of the north, including Benoue and Bouba Njida.

Salak Airport serves Maroua, capital of the Far North Region, deep in the Sahel near the borders with Chad and Nigeria. It is the most northerly airport in Cameroon and the air gateway to a region of striking landscapes, from the volcanic spires of the Mandara Mountains to Waza National Park.

🚆 N’Gaoundere (NGE)
N’Gaoundere Airport serves N’Gaoundere, capital of the Adamawa Region, high on the Adamawa Plateau that forms the natural divide between Cameroon’s forested south and its drier north. The city is best known as the northern terminus of the Transcamerounais railway from Yaounde, which makes it the rail and road gateway for the three northern regions.
The airport reaches about one regularly-served route, the Camair-Co domestic hop to Yaounde and Douala. For many travellers heading north, N’Gaoundere is where the choice between flying, the train and the road network all meet.

Cameroon’s other airports
Beyond these five, Cameroon has a scattering of smaller airfields that see little or no scheduled passenger service today. Bamenda and Bafoussam in the western highlands, Bertoua in the east and Tiko and Kribi near the coast all have runways but rely on the road network and the two big airports for most travel. Service to several of these has been thinned by years of unrest in the North-West and South-West regions and by the limited fleet of Camair-Co.
The result is a network that funnels almost everything through Douala and Yaounde, with the three northern fields at Garoua, Maroua and N’Gaoundere kept alive mainly as domestic lifelines.
