Population Guess Game

Population Guess is a free daily geography game that asks one deceptively hard question: how many people actually live there? Each day you get five mystery countries, one at a time, and you estimate the population of each from nothing but its flag and continent.

You do not need to be exact. Your guess is scored by how close you land on a fair, log-based scale, so being in the right ballpark still earns most of the points, and a wild miss is obvious the moment the real number counts up on the reveal bar. Five rounds, a running score out of 5,000, and everyone in the world plays the same five countries.

It is a fast, replayable way to build a feel for world population that a static quiz never gives you. Guess your five, share your emoji score, then keep the run going in endless mode.

Play Population Guess

How to play

  1. A mystery country appears with its flag and continent. Read the clues and picture how big it is.
  2. Enter your population estimate. Type it however you think (45M, 1.2B, 800K, or a full number), or drag the log-scale slider.
  3. Lock in your guess. The reveal bar shows the real population counting up next to your guess, how many times too high or low you were, and your points for the round.
  4. Play all five countries. Your score adds up out of 5,000, with a bullseye for any guess within 10% of the real figure.
  5. Copy your spoiler-free emoji score to share, then jump into endless mode to keep your streak alive.

Game modes

Two ways to play, both free and login-free:

  • Daily. Five countries a day, one estimate each, scored by accuracy out of 5,000. Everyone worldwide gets the same five, drawn one from each population band (a tiny nation up to a giant) so every day mixes easy and hard. New countries at midnight UTC.
  • Endless. A fresh random country every round. Stay within 2x of the true population to keep your streak going. Three lives, one long high-score run.

The geography behind it

Population is one of the hardest facts to eyeball because countries span four orders of magnitude, from Monaco at around 38,000 people to India at over 1.4 billion. A country that feels large on the map can be sparsely populated, and a small one can be packed. That gap between area and population is exactly what the game trains.

Because populations range so widely, guesses are scored on a log-ratio scale rather than a flat percentage: being twice off costs the same whether a country has one million or one hundred million people. Exact guesses score 1,000, within 10% scores over 900, twice off scores about 490, and ten times off scores zero. It is the fair way to reward a good estimate at any size.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Population Guess?

Each round shows one mystery country. Estimate how many people live there, either by typing a number (you can use shorthand like 45M or 1.2B) or by dragging the log-scale slider, then lock it in. You play five countries a day and your score is the sum of how accurate each guess was.

Is it the same countries for everyone each day?

Yes. The five daily countries are chosen from the calendar date in UTC, so every player in the world gets exactly the same five puzzles on the same day. That is what makes comparing scores and sharing your emoji band fair. The countries change at midnight UTC.

How is my guess scored?

On a log-ratio scale, which is fair across the huge range of country populations. Your accuracy is how many times too high or low you were, so being twice off scores the same for a small country as a large one. An exact guess is 1,000 points, within 10% is a bullseye worth over 900, and a guess ten times off scores zero.

What is endless mode?

A non-stop streak mode. You get a fresh random country each round and keep going as long as you stay within 2x of the true population. You have three lives, so it rewards consistent estimating rather than one lucky guess. Your best streak is saved on your device.

Where does the population data come from?

Population figures are 2024 data from Mappr’s open country dataset, and the flags are from the open-source flag-icons project (CC0). Everything is bundled into the game, so it runs entirely in your browser with no tracking and no sign-up.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is completely free and needs no account. Your streak and stats are stored only on your own device, and the whole game plays in your browser.
