Country Clues is a daily geography deduction game: one mystery country, six guesses, and a new clue after every miss. You start with nothing but the country’s population, and each wrong answer unlocks another fact: its area, its continent, its GDP, the first letter of its capital, and finally the shape of the country itself.

The fewer clues you need, the bigger the bragging rights. Every guess also earns you spoiler-free comparison hints, so even a miss tells you whether the mystery country has more people, covers more land, or sits on the same continent as your guess. It is part trivia, part detective work, and all geography.

How to play

1. Read the first clue: the mystery country’s population.
2. Type a country name and pick it from the suggestions. You have six guesses in total.
3. Wrong guess? A new clue unlocks: area, then continent, then GDP, then the capital’s first letter, and finally the country’s outline.
4. Check the comparison chips on each miss: arrows tell you whether the mystery country has a larger or smaller population and area than your guess, and the globe icon tells you whether it is on the same continent.
5. Solve it in as few clues as you can, then hit “Share result” to copy a spoiler-free score card and challenge your friends.

Game modes

Daily challenge. Every day at 00:00 UTC a new mystery country goes live, and it is the same one for every player worldwide. One case per day: solve it, keep your streak alive, and compare scores with everyone else playing that day’s puzzle.

Endless mode. Done with the daily? Endless mode deals unlimited random countries with the same clue ladder, perfect for practice or for settling who in the room really knows their geography. Endless rounds never touch your daily streak or stats.

How the clues work

The six clues are ordered from hardest to easiest. Population alone is a genuine expert-level tell: only a handful of players can separate the world’s mid-sized countries by headcount. Area narrows things further, and the continent clue suddenly shrinks the field from 191 countries to a few dozen. GDP rewards players who follow the news, the capital’s first letter usually cracks the case for anyone with a good atlas memory, and the outline is the final giveaway: if you reach clue six, the answer is staring right at you.

The comparison chips work like a game of hot and cold. Guess France and see “population ▲”, and you know the mystery country has more people than France. Combine the arrows with the revealed clues to triangulate the answer: that is the deduction loop that makes the game so satisfying to solve early.

The geography behind it

Country Clues is secretly a crash course in comparative geography. Population and area teach you the surprising mismatches: Australia is enormous but has fewer residents than Shanghai, while Bangladesh packs more people than Russia into a fraction of the space. GDP reveals economic geography, and capitals are full of traps: the capital of Turkey is Ankara, not Istanbul, and Australia’s is Canberra, not Sydney. By the time you have played for a few weeks, you will know the world’s vital statistics better than most quiz champions.

The final clue, the country’s shape, is the purest geography test of all. Some outlines are unmistakable: Italy’s boot, Chile’s ribbon, the boomerang of Croatia. Others, like the boxy states of West Africa or the archipelagos of the Pacific, will genuinely stretch your map memory. All 191 countries in the game come with real Natural Earth outlines, so every silhouette is the genuine article.

Frequently asked questions

Is it the same mystery country for everyone today?

Yes. The daily answer is seeded from the UTC date, so every player in the world gets the same country on the same day, and a new one appears at 00:00 UTC. That is what makes shared score cards comparable: your 3/6 and your friend’s 5/6 refer to the same puzzle.

How many countries are in the game?

191 countries, covering essentially every UN member state. A handful of microstates and territories are left out because they lack reliable data or a drawable outline at the map scale the game uses.

Where does the data come from?

Population, area, GDP, capitals and life expectancy come from Mappr’s own open country dataset. Country outlines come from Natural Earth via the world-atlas project, and ISO country codes from Wikidata. Everything is free, open data, bundled into the game itself: nothing is fetched or tracked while you play.

What happens if I run out of guesses?

The game reveals the answer honestly: you see the country highlighted on a world map along with its flag, capital and key facts, so a loss still teaches you something. In daily mode you can come back tomorrow; in endless mode you can deal a new country immediately.

Does the share button spoil the answer?

No. The share card only shows your score, which clues you needed and your hit-and-miss row as emoji, never the country’s name. Friends can try the same puzzle without any spoilers.

Is Country Clues free? Do I need an account?

Completely free, no account, no app install. Your streak and stats are stored privately in your own browser. It works great on phones, tablets and desktops.
