Your “range” shifts with the weather, the highway speed, the cargo, and how much battery you’re willing to arrive with. Public charging is uneven — a 350 kW station next to a 50 kW one can mean a 15-minute stop versus a 75-minute one. The planner uses open routing data to draw the road route, then places suggested DC fast-charging stops along the way based on live data from OpenChargeMap. You get total drive time, total charging time, and a map you can pan and zoom.
This tool is built for the moment before the trip — when you’re sanity-checking whether a route is realistic in your car, comparing two destinations, or seeing roughly how long a long-haul day will actually take once charging is factored in. It’s not a turn-by-turn navigator; pair it with your in-car nav for the live drive.

How to use the EV Trip Planner
- Select your vehicle. Pick from the dropdown (Tesla Model Y, Model 3, Ioniq 5, EV6, Mach-E, ID.4, Rivian R1T, Bolt EV, Polestar 2) or choose “Enter Custom Specs” and type your usable battery capacity in kWh, consumption in Wh/km, and max DC charging power in kW.
- Enter your starting point and destination. Type a city, address, or landmark and pick from the autocomplete suggestions. Geocoding is powered by OpenStreetMap’s Nominatim.
- Set your starting battery. Drag the slider to match what you’ll actually leave with — not what the car shows fully charged.
- Set your safety buffer. This is the minimum state-of-charge you want at any stop or at the destination. 15% is a sensible default; raise it if you’re driving in cold weather or unfamiliar territory.
- Click “Plan Smart Route.” You’ll get a polyline drawn on the map, green pins for suggested charging stops, and a summary panel with total distance, drive time, total charging time, and arrival state-of-charge.
- Iterate. Change vehicles, swap the destination, or tweak the buffer to see how the trip changes. Hit “Reset Route” to clear and start over.

Which EV models are supported?
The dropdown includes Tesla Model Y Long Range, Model 3 Long Range, Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD, Kia EV6 AWD, Ford Mustang Mach-E Extended Range AWD, VW ID.4 Pro, Rivian R1T Large Pack, Chevrolet Bolt EV, and Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor. If your car isn’t in the list, choose “Enter Custom Specs” and type in three numbers from your owner’s manual or a spec sheet: usable battery (kWh), real-world consumption (Wh/km), and peak DC charging power (kW).
Where does the charging station data come from?
Live charger locations and power ratings come from OpenChargeMap, a community-maintained open database with global coverage. The planner filters for DC fast chargers (50 kW and above) that are currently operational.
How accurate are the range and charging time estimates?
Good enough for trip planning, not good enough for live navigation. The energy model assumes a flat consumption rate based on the vehicle’s published efficiency — it doesn’t model elevation, headwinds, ambient temperature, or your speed. Charging time uses a simplified average-power model with a per-vehicle curve factor, which is realistic for a 10→80% stop but will understate time if you’re charging to 100%. For long trips, add a 10–15% margin to both drive and charging estimates.
Does it account for cold weather, elevation, or highway speed?
Not directly. The consumption number you select represents typical mixed driving. In cold weather or on sustained highway speeds above 75 mph, real consumption can be 20–35% higher — raise the “safety buffer” slider to compensate, or pick a custom efficiency that reflects your real-world numbers.
Can I plan international or cross-country routes?
Yes — routing uses OSRM, which has global coverage, and OpenChargeMap has data on most major markets (North America, Europe, UK, Australia, parts of Asia). Charger density varies; sparsely covered regions may return fewer suggested stops.
Is the planner free? Do I need an account?
Free and account-free. Nothing about your trip is stored or sent to a server we control — all planning happens in your browser using public, open APIs.
Why doesn’t a specific charger I know about show up?
Two common reasons: the station isn’t listed in OpenChargeMap yet (you can submit it directly on their site), or it falls below the 50 kW DC threshold the planner uses. Tesla Superchargers in markets where they’re open to non-Tesla CCS vehicles will appear; closed Tesla-only sites typically don’t.
Can I use this offline or save a planned route?
Not at the moment — the planner needs network access to fetch routes and charger data, and there’s no save/share feature yet. For now, screenshot the result or copy the addresses into your in-car navigation before you set off.
